When I first drew this, I was going through a rough time. One of the most heart wrenching results was my inability to say the Shema, the most crucial of Jewish prayers. It felt like it got stuck in my throat – if anything came out it came out in a choked whisper, almost laced with fear. For me, this art captured the visceral pain of that experience.

However when I posted it, something cool happened: I found that the idea of the Shema “getting stuck in the throat” resonated with a lot of people of a variety of reasons. It’s always amazing when art that has a specific meaning takes on new meanings the minute it’s shared.

It has also taken on new meaning for me. I can say the Shema now (b”H) more powerful than before. I think it comes from a combination of rigorous healing AND the fact that I’ve felt the Shema as a full body experience.

The Old Masters used to make multiple prints of their work on which they etched over certain areas, making hybrid print and original works. In this style, I have painted over digital prints, creating a one-of-a-kind work around this sacred text.
